Fire Prevention Bureau

The East Dundee Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for inspecting commercial and industrial occupancies for compliance with the District's fire prevention codes.  Each occupancy is formally inspected approximately once a year. Occupancies of a higher risk potential will be inspected more frequently.  All new commercial/industrial/multi-family occupancies are required to be inspected prior to opening for business and/or occupancy in order to obtain their local government's business license.

The Bureau’s services include but not limited to:

  • Annual inspection of all business, commercial and multi-family residential structures Plan reviews of newly constructed and remodeled structures
  • System compliance inspection and testing of installed fire protection systems (fire alarms, sprinkler/standpipes, and hood/duct suppression systems)
  • Special event inspections for uses such as rummage sales, haunted houses, antique shows, etc. Code review and interpretation
  • Citizen concerns/complaints related to public spaces
  • Miscellaneous inspections for items such as carnival rides, firework displays, tents, and hazardous material storage
  • Fire & Arson Investigations

Forms

The forms page provides essential documents such as the welcome packet, safety guidelines, and required safety sheets for new businesses or property owners. These forms ensure compliance with local fire codes and promote a safer environment for occupants and visitors. Submitting completed forms to the Fire Prevention Bureau allows officials to review, track, and address potential fire hazards proactively. Timely submission is crucial for avoiding delays in inspections, permits, or approvals related to fire safety.

Smoke Alarms

The program "Be Alarmed!" was developed to educate Illinois residents on the dangers of fire in the home, how to prevent fires from occurring in the house, and to ensure there are working smoke alarms properly installed in homes. Providing 10-year concealed battery smoke alarms ensures that the power source cannot be removed from the unit and, if properly maintained, will last the life of the device.

Commercial Inspections

Preparation for a fire inspection is essential. This is your opportunity to ensure all your testing and maintenance are on schedule and up to date. A responsible person with keys to all areas should be available for the inspection. After an inspection, whoever will be responsible for making corrections needs to be identified, whether the building owner or the business owner. In many cases, the responsibility is assigned in the lease agreement. To better prepare for the inspections, we have developed a checklist to prepare all property owners/building occupants for fire inspections.
